Location, Location, Location.

We
chose a location in Tijeras, five miles east of Albuquerque
on I40, with ample Internet access bandwidth, stable power,
and just 20 minutes (well, 30 minutes in rush hour!) from
Albuquerque's international airport.
With
Sandia National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory,
the Air Force Phillips Laboratory, and major manufacturers
including Intel, Eclipse, Phillips, Honeywell and a host of
pharmaceutical firms, Albuquerque offers the infrastructure
needed for a major hosting location.
And
the local laboratories and industry provide a labor pool to

allow support for the most demanding projects.
About
the only natural disaster we have to plan for is a brush fire.
(Los Alamos is at a higher, forested altitude. We have pinions,
junipers, and sagebrush.) Our building is located between
Interstate 40 and Old Route 66, providing excellent fire breaks
should we ever need them.

Choosing
a location that supports network reliability needed to enable
a hosting company to fulfill its Service Level Agreement is
not a matter of chance. We choose New Mexico to meet our business
goals.
The
fact that the quality of life here is superior is just icing
on the cake. «END»

Power
Plant Upgrade
continued from page 1. . .
our
emergency power plant.
What
started as a simple replacement of our old generator soon
became a major project.
All
of our servers, routers, and switches are connected to
Uninterruptible
Power Supplies (UPS's). The UPS units condition the line voltage
and prevent the computers from turning off for a short period
after loosing utility power (until the generator takes over).
Unfortunately,
UPS units require an oversized generator to allow for their
switching transients. This, and to allow for reasonable growth,
calls for a MUCH bigger generator.
We
received bids from Cummins and Kohler for the power plant,
and went with Cummins. Both make good generators, but
Cummins
has a full service center in Albuquerque.
After
doing a presentation to the Village of Tijeras, contracting
for trenching across the parking lot and a new concrete pad,
and extensive electrical modifications to automatically switch
to the generator if we loose power, we are finally done.
Now
I suspect we won't see a power problem for years to come!
